Position Background:
Silverleaf
Academy (www.silverleaf.co.tz) is a new chain of affordable, high
quality primary schools in Tanzania. Our mission is to provide the
highest quality learning at the most affordable levels. We have recently
launched our first set of primary schools in the towns of Moshi and
Arusha. Silverleaf Academy is planning a residential 6 week teacher
training course for up to 50 new potential Tanzanian teacher recruits,
over July and August 2017. We are looking to develop and pilot specific
School Leadership and Management training modules for our existing Head
teachers and fast-track teacher candidates. The School Leadership
Trainer will work alongside Silverleaf’s Education Lead to help design
and refine School Leadership training content and delivery mechanisms,
whilst also mentoring existing School Heads on real-time school-based
management issues and teacher coaching techniques.
The ideal
candidate will have front-line teaching experience and experience of
school management and teacher training. An interest in or working
knowledge of the Sub-Saharan African education sector will be desirable.
Do you want to nurture Tanzanian School Leaders this summer?
As
part of a wider teacher training initiative in July and August 2017, we
are seeking to engage one International Fellow during a 6-12 week summer
internship in Northern Tanzania, who will provide outstanding
pedagogical leadership and take a major role in the professional
development of our Head Teachers and our future School Leadership
training design. We wish to appoint a educationalist with experience of
coaching School Leaders and schools management, who will take a lead in
implementing this coaching model during their time with us.

The International Fellow will report
to and work alongside Silverleaf’s Education Leads and will be spending
significant time with our Head Teachers and between our two operational
primary schools
You will have proven experience in:
Evaluating and developing the quality of teaching and learning
Observing and assessing instructional quality of classroom teachers
Managing small teams and organising individual professional development sessions
Enthusing and motivating teachers and students
Creating new training content for classroom practitioners
We are looking for an International Fellow who:
Has 3-5 years of front-line teaching experience, ideally at middle or senior leadership level
Has proven experience managing and training small teams of teachers
Has
an interest in developing new context-specific School Leadership
training content, and piloting it for the first time within Silverleaf
Academy’s first two schools
Is efficient, adaptable, personable and
shares Silverleaf Academy’s vision for affordable, high quality private
schooling within Tanzania

opportunity to deploy their training skills and leadership experience
amongst Tanzanian Head Teachers and front-line pre-primary and primary
teachers, and help our organisation implement a new model of in-service
School Leadership training which will ensure educational excellence over
the years to come.
This 6-12 week Summer Fellowship will be
attractive to mid-career teaching professionals who have a desire to
experience training in an education development context and immerse
themselves in a new educational culture where trainees are eager to
learn. This will be excellent experience for those who are interested
in either pursuing further work in education development
internationally, or to enhance direct school leadership coaching
skillsets. Silverleaf Academy plan to recruit and train hundreds of
Tanzanian teachers over the next few years, and are hopeful that
International Fellows will be able to return to us annually and continue
to coach our teachers as the progress through their professional
careers.
What are the likely costs of an International Fellowship?
As
a new startup Silverleaf Academy is able to provide this position for
volunteers only. The organization is able to assist with the mechanics
of applying for immigration visas and identifying and securing local
accommodation, but is unable to provide working stipends or living
allowances for the duration of the Fellowship. Fellows will be
assisted with all work-related transport between schools and the office,
as well as a free lunch meal during working week days. Likely costs
(in $USD) a Fellow will incur include the following:
- Return economy flight from Europe to Tanzania: $1,000
- 3 Month single-entry business visa: $250
- Monthly accommodation costs: $100-$200
- Monthly subsistence costs: $250-$500
- Medical & Travel insurance: $50-$150
- Immunizations (Yellow Fever): $50
